TOPIC: Too few ordinary servers

Too few ordinary servers 9 years 2 months ago #6145

I counted 9 ordinary servers where only 2 has a desirable goal (Long goal) since they're always running/have ppl in it. On the other hand theres atleast 13 city builder servers which rarely no one is on. Is there a chance the number and type servers could match the need?

Yes, thats my point. Why so few desirable servers and so many no one plays on? Each time I wanna play they're already years into a game and I cant compete. You should have had 2-3 more Long Goal servers so theres a bigger chance there is a free server just like your city builder servers

OpenTTD doesn't have a player base that big to increase number of servers like there's no tomorrow AND dedicated servers aren't cheap. Therefore, we try to have a large variety of servers and goals, with the amount of servers we consider reasonable by their popularity.
Just imagine that other people that gets in a game already at middle of the goal and would post here for a couple more servers!
If it's your case, you have 3 options when a game is mid goal: Start company and try your best; wait till goal is reached; join another game/server.

Current situation (Long goals):
#2: 0% of goal
#5: 50% of goal, but nobody plays, you can reset it
#9: no players
K1: 16% - far, far away from finish

Not so bad.
And I see similar situation every day.
Like ST2 said: start company and compete, or wait a while to finish.

Why not try to beat highscores on shorter goals first? #1 or #4.

tomb mentioned another option (I forgot xD), specially when server is without players (many start company and leave). When that's the case, you can use !voterestart to get a new and clean map :)
